Jazz Tutor Reviews

PC Magazine - December 1996

... Jazz Tutor is vastly more ambitious, featuring the renowned sax player Phil Woods. There's enough material here for years of study, from modal scales to jazz harmonies to Phil Woods' life to play-along MIDI files. It transposes for piano, treble horns, and woodwinds, but a trombone player is out of luck unless you pull the MIDI files off the CD and transpose to bass clef with a sequencer program. This is a slick, polished production, with excellent voice-overs, well-written instructions, lots of music to listen to and learn from, and plenty of places to play along--at your own speed. I was especially impressed with the scale and chord reference pop-ups: The program shows the underlying theory and practice behind what you're hearing and playing. Even if you don't play an instrument, Jazz Tutor can give you a whole new appreciation for the complexities and fine points of jazz.
